Treatment

  • Elevation : to reduce edema (swelling) and increase circulation
  • Antibiotics : Broad spectrum antibiotics like penicillin or 3rd generation cephalosporin. Antifungals – if any suspicion supper added fungal infection
  • Dressing : Epsom salt dressing to relieve swelling by its hygroscopic action (drags water towards it).
  • Strict control of sugars
  • If a patient is in septicaemia or sepsis, often requires ICU care and appropriate monitoring.
  • If a patient is not responding of medical management, may rarely require surgical intervention (making small nick to drain infected fluid in the compartment) and change of antibiotics as per culture report.
