An umbilical granuloma is a small, overgrown lump of tissue that forms in the umbilicus (naval region). It appears moist (wet), pinkish-red, and may ooze clear or yellow fluid which is usually foul (bad) smelling. May be associated with pain during stage of infection.
An umbilical sinus is a small tract or opening at the belly button (navel) that fails to close completely after birth. It presents as persistent discharge, foul smelling if infected. This condition is usually congenital and can be seen in infants or young children, though in rare cases, it may appear in adults due to infection (due to poor hygiene) or trauma
Umbilical sinus usually presents with persistent discharge, redness, swelling, or pain at the navel, and may become infected, leading to foul-smelling pus or abscess formation.
Umbilical granulomas appear as small, soft, pink or red lumps (1–10 mm) at the umbilicus, sometimes with discharge. Usually painless but can be painful if infected.
Diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on physical examination and visible signs. In some cases, imaging such as ultrasound may be used to assess deeper tracts.
Non-surgical treatment is usually effective for umbilical granulomas.
Surgical treatment is considered for umbilical sinuses or persistent umbilical granuloma that do not respond to conservative care. This involves excision of the sinus tract, under local or general anesthesia, to prevent future complications or infection.
Post-surgery care includes keeping the area clean and dry. Should be attentive to any signs of recurrence or infection.
Early diagnosis and proper treatment of umbilical conditions prevent long-term complications and discomfort.
